Anyone who has ever changed a tractor clutch knows the moment: The new disc is in, the pressure plate is bolted, the two halves of the tractor are ready. And then the gearbox input shaft just won't go into the hub. There is pushing, turning, and manoeuvring. In the worst case, it means: everything has to be taken apart again.
A few millimetres that cost hours
The cause is almost always the same: The clutch disc is not exactly in the centre. As long as the pressure plate is not yet tightened, the disc can move freely. A few millimetres of misalignment are enough, and the input shaft no longer meets the hub.
Sometimes it works with force anyway. But then the hub, the teeth, and the pilot bearing suffer, and the new clutch is damaged before the tractor has even driven the first metre.
The solution: a centring pin
A clutch centring pin is inserted through the hub of the clutch disc during installation and guided in the pilot bearing. This keeps the disc exactly centred while the pressure plate is tightened. Afterwards, the pin is pulled out, and the disc remains precisely in position. The input shaft finds the hub on the first attempt.
This brings you three things:
- No second separation: The tractor comes together the first time, without lost hours.
- No damaged parts: Without force, the hub, gearing and pilot bearing remain intact.
- Work more safely: Less manoeuvring with the heavy tractor halves means less danger for hands and fingers.
Three tips from our workshop
- Check dimensions before purchase: Centre pins are available in various diameters. Measure the hub and pilot bearing or ask us with the tractor model and part number.
- Lightly grease the hub: A thin film of coupling hub grease on the gearing makes it easier to assemble. Less is more here: grease on the clutch lining leads to slipping.
- Tighten the pressure plate in a cross pattern: Tighten the screws evenly and in a cross pattern, finishing with the specified torque.
Buy or rent?
We developed our clutch centring pins in Trub from daily work with tractor clutches. They are available in two versions: 17/22/35 mm and 20.00/26.76/43.20 mm, both 225 mm long and made of plastic, for CHF 79.00 each.
Do you rarely change a clutch? Then you can also rent the 17/22/35 mm pin.
