Troubleshooting for Visctronic fans
Symptom
Motor overheating.
Solution
The Visctronic fan is controlled by three factors:
Engine coolant temperature
Transmission oil temperature.
Air conditioning
When the A/C compressor clutch is activated, the Visctronic fan operates at full speed (a 10-second delay is programmed into the software from when the A/C compressor clutch is activated to when the Visctronic fan ramps up to full speed).
The engine coolant temperature recorded in the instrument cluster is measured by a different coolant temperature sensor than the Visctronic fan controller (XCM / SCM).
There are three temperature sensors on the side of the thermostat housing.
The top sensor sends a signal to the instrument cluster for coolant temperature indication and warning.
The middle sensor sends a signal to the XCM / SCM control unit for operation of the Visctronic fan and to the engine control unit (if installed).
The lower sensor sends a signal to the electric motor injection pump (cold start early adjustment on the mechanical fuel pump).
Just because the coolant temperature gauge shows that the engine temperature is rising, it does not necessarily mean that the Visctronic fan is activated or accelerating.
The following is the logic for operating the Visctronic fan:
Engine coolant temperature: fan runs at minimum speed of 850/min until coolant temperature reaches 86.6 degrees Celsius (188 degrees Fahrenheit).
From 86.6 - 95-degrees Celsius (188 - 203-degrees Fahrenheit), fan speed increases according to engine temperature.
When 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit) is reached, the fan switches to normal control mode. In normal control mode, the fan speed varies to try to maintain 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit).
When the coolant reaches 108.9 degrees Celsius (228 degrees Fahrenheit), the fan has maximum speed.
Gearbox oil temperature: If the gearbox oil temperature is less than 76.7 degrees Celsius (170 degrees Fahrenheit), the fan speed will not increase.
From 76.7 to 95-degrees Celsius (170 to 203-degrees Fahrenheit), the fan speed increases according to the oil temperature. The fan runs at maximum speed when the oil temperature is above 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit).
The air conditioner: When the air conditioner is activated, the fan speed increases to 2400/min. There is a 10-second delay before this increase.
If the sensor does not meet the stated specifications, replace sensor 500382599 (centre on thermostat housing).
