Exhaust smokes
What does the plume of smoke from the diesel vehicle reveal? A distinction is made between white, blue and black.
a) A white smoke plume can be observed in cold weather; it is the water vapour produced by the combustion of the fuel in the engine.
It is the water vapour produced by the combustion of the fuel in the engine and escapes with the exhaust gases into the open air, where it immediately condenses as a white mist due to the cold air.
It is therefore not detrimental to the engine.
b) A blue smoke plume appears when excess engine oil is burnt in the combustion chamber.
The excess oil can be the result of too high an oil level in the oil sump or too worn piston rings or cylinders.
cylinders. This phenomenon can also occur when the engine has been idling for a long time without any cause.
c) A black plume of smoke, which is most frequently observed in diesel vehicles, is the result of inadequate and incomplete combustion of the fuel.
and incomplete combustion of the fuel injected into the cylinders.
However, if the combustion is not completed, the carbon which is the most difficult to burn is more or less
the most difficult to burn carbon is more or less excreted in the form of soot, which results in the dark colour of the exhaust gases and is
and remains suspended in the air for a long time due to its fine distribution. The incomplete combustion of the fuel
can have various causes.
Cause: Injected fuel quantity Control rod stop is too large.
Remedy: Adjust correctly
Cause: Start of injection too late
Remedy: Set injection point correctly
Cause: Injection nozzles drip (poor atomisation, incorrect injection pressure) (incorrect nozzle inserts)
Remedy: Cetane number of fuel too low ?
Cause: Ignition delay too great
Remedy: Change fuel grade
Cause: Insufficient compression
Remedy: Check valves, check cylinders and pistons
Cause: Air filter clogged or dirty ?
Remedy: Replace air filter.
