    Product information:

Check the gearbox side plate seal (part number 82012862).

    Symptom:
Tractor does not move when drive is selected and low pressure warning light is on.

    Solution
The transmission side plate seal is faulty. This can cause pressurised oil to take the easiest route, a return channel to the oil pan.

If the side plate seal (part number 82012862) between the valve block and the 16x16 transmission side cover breaks, it will allow oil to leak from one gear to another. Typically, the seal is always faulty at one point, which allows the pressure in the C3 clutch to drop to 9.6 and 11.7 bars, depending on the severity of the failure. The main symptom is loss of drive or slippage in the flat gears. Part of the seal could also break off and contaminate other components in the low pressure system.

If the seal is faulty, replace the seal and check the valve for any deformation. The valve should be flat within 2.03 mm. Machine or replace the valve if necessary.

    Ford Series 60
    Check the common clutch
    Symptom
16 x 16 gearbox will not drive in four or more specific gears
    Solution
Common clutch is unable to engage.

    Information updated April 2012
The 16 x 16 transmission uses four multiple plate wet clutches. Two clutches are engaged at any given time when the unit is driving. If the transmission does not drive in certain gears, see the attached transmission diagram to see which clutch all affected transmissions share.

    Clutch
    Gears C1 C2 C3 C4
    1, 5, 9, 13 X X
    2, 6, 10, 14 X X
    3, 7, 11, 15 X X
    4, 8, 12, 16 X X
Example: If the tractor does not drive in gears 3, 4, 7, or 8, check the C1 clutch, as it is the only clutch shared by these gears.

Divide the system into its electrical, hydraulic and mechanical components and check voltage, hydraulic pressure and mechanical movement. Check the voltage to the clutch solenoid and the hydraulic pressure of the clutch as explained in detail in the workshop manual. If both the tension and hydraulic pressure are within specification, the clutch piston is stuck or the clutch plates are worn.

    April 2012 Update
40 and TS series tractors equipped with a 16X16 Quad Mod transmission may experience partial or complete loss of drive, sluggish shifting or partial engagement of creeper.

    Affected Units:
Units prior to serial number 106357B (August 1, 1998) with a transmission date code of 8F16 (June 16, 1998).

    Cause:
The seal between the transmission control valve and the side plates ruptures, causing the circuits to affect each other.

    Correction:
A new transmission side plate seal with steel core has been released. The seal also has single circular transition holes instead of the extended holes to give more force. The new seal has been included in production from gearbox date code 8F16. The part is directly interchangeable with the previous part.
