Milled groove at the bottom to drain off brake wear !

There are no specific instructions in the workshop manual for the installation of the brake pistons and the inner and outer brake piston rubber seals can be easily damaged if installed incorrectly.

Open the bleed screw one turn to allow air trapped behind the piston during installation to escape.
Next, install the brake piston into the housing without the inner and outer O-ring seals and return springs. Rotate the piston until the dowel pins are aligned. The piston is fully seated at the bottom of the bore.
Use a paint stick and place a reference mark on the piston and the brake housing in two places.
Remove the piston from the rear housing and lightly grind the bevel on the rear housing where the inner and outer O-ring seals of the piston enter the rear housing. This will remove any sharp edges on these surfaces.
Install the inner and outer O-ring seals onto the brake pistons. Lubricate the seals with a light coating of white grease and then gear oil.
Place the return springs back into the housing, align the brake piston with the reference marks and use a rubber mallet to lightly tap the piston into the rear housing until it stops, taking care not to jam the piston.
