Operation of the 8 x 8 group gearbox
Group shift lever moves beyond the lock and blocks
Wrong shift rod installed.

If the shift rod moves beyond the lock in the 8 x 8 gearbox, this may be due to one of the following causes:

An incorrect shift rod has been fitted.
A gearbox bore that does not meet the specification can cause the shift rod to move too far.
Ensure that the correct shift rod has been fitted by measuring the distance between the centre of the two coiled spring pins that attach the upper and lower range shift forks to the rod.The distance between the coiled spring pins 5174726 must be 40 mm. The dowel pin holes are also drilled at a slight angle towards the shift cover opening.

The forward movement of the range shift rod is limited by a steel pin. When the shift rod is moved forward against this pin, the upper shaft, high speed shift sleeve is engaged to shift into B or upper range gear. The backward movement of the range shift rod is limited by the depth of a hole drilled in the back of the transmission case. If the hole is drilled too deep, the shift rod will move beyond the catch and lock. Make sure that the shift rod stops when the lock groove for gear A in the lower section is aligned with the hole in the side of the gearbox housing. If it moves too far, add shims to the back of the hole to limit the travel and align the lock groove with the hole in the side of the gearbox housing.
